DVD BOX-SET RELEASE:
MONDAY 11th JUNE 2012
Arrow films’ Nordic Noir label is pleased to announce the UK DVD Box Set release of WALLANDER: ORIGINAL FILMS 1-6 on Monday 11th June 2012.
In some of the first WALLANDER episodes ever to be produced, this unique collection joins the original Kurt Wallander, played by Rolf Lassgård, as he sets out to solve 4 mysterious cases across 6 action-packed episodes.
Based on the best-selling books by Swedish crime writer Henning Mankell, detective Kurt Wallander is an intense and headstrong maverick, prone to eating poorly, sleeping irregularly and drinking too much. The ORIGINAL FILMS 1-6 Box Set begins with a violent and deadly showdown in “Pyramid”, followed by the 2-part thriller “Firewall”, the baffling “One Step Behind” and the unpredictable 2-part finale “The Man Who Smiled”.
The original series of WALLANDER films starring Rolf Lassgård have proved hugely influential. Produced between 1994 and 2007, they not only paved the way for a Swedish television adaptation featuring 26 episodes across 2 series, where Kurt Wallander was played by Krister Henriksson, but also for an English adaptation, commissioned by the BBC. Broadcast on BBC1 and syndicated worldwide, WALLANDER was played by the legendary Irish actor Kenneth Branagh.
WALLANDER is widely credited for kick-starting the UK’s love of foreign language drama. To coincide with BBC1’s big-budget English adaptation of the series, BBC4 announced that it would air its Swedish counterpart (based on the original films starring Rolf Lassgård). First broadcast in late 2008, The Killing and Borgen have since followed it into the nations hearts, with The Bridge now set to continue the trend. Following its recent television premier, which was seen by over 1 million viewers, the season 1 box set of The Bridge will be released on the Noric Noir imprint on May 21st.
Rolf Lassgård is one of Sweden’s finest and best-loved actors. He will return to UK screens later this year as Sebastian Bergman, a troubled detective, battling grief over the loss of both his wife and daughter in the Thailand tsunami. In two highly anticipated 90 minute episodes, originally broadcast in his native Sweden on Christmas day 2010, the storyline revolves around the murder of a 15-year-old boy, and a copycat serial perpetrator who appears to be basing his crimes on those of a killer Bergman himself put behind bars.
A light plane crashes outside of Mossby strand, and a detonated armour-piercing shell is found in the wreckage. Kurt Wallander is called in to investigate. A few days later, two elderly sisters are killed in en explosion in a sewing supplies shop. Traces of an advanced explosive are found in the burnt-out shop, and evidence soon mounts to indicate that both events are tied to a showdown between two rival narcotics gangs.
By chance, Wallander makes a strange discovery about one of the suspects, which leads him back to a traumatic experience from his early days on the force. The continued investigation becomes an intense, violent struggle with Wallander’s past…
"Firewall" (Parts 1 & 2)
The two-part thriller "Firewall" links two cases that on the surface appear unrelated, and throws Kurt into a world where he has no footing - the world of computers. "Firewall" is based on the book of the same name by Henning Mankell. A taxi is found empty, smashed up and full of blood. Two young girls are brought in for questioning and confess murdering the taxi driver, but will not say where the body is. The next day Tynnes Falk is found dead at a cashpoint, with his receipt in his hand. A computer expert, Falk checked had been checking his account every week for months. Two apparently unrelated cases - or are they? As Kurt Wallander searches for answers, he finds himself dizzy and unfocused and has to seek medical care.
"One Step Behind"
Detective story based on a novel by Henning Mankell. Ystad police are baffled when they find the bodies of three friends buried in the woods. Soon afterwards, their own Detective Svedberg is also found dead. First clues point to Svedberg having taken his own life, but soon enough Detective Kurt Wallander discovers a link between his former colleague, the three murder victims and a mysterious fourth person.
"The Man Who Smiled" (Parts 1 & 2)
Detective Superintendent Kurt Wallander’s old friend pleas for help, as he suspects his father’s lethal accident was really foul play. But Wallander doesn’t believe him until its too late. Immoral behavior, deceit, lies and desperate actions in search of love or money are the driving forces in this criminal drama. While trying to solve a tangle of murders, Kurt Wallander manages to betray his own loved ones. Who has the right to judge and who can claim to be morally correct? The plot involves international trade with human organs, forced donors and plain old greed.
