| THE ROGER CORMAN COLLECTION |
Nick-named ‘King of the B’s’ director/producer Roger Corman excelled at making highly imaginative and entertaining low-budget films and is probably best remembered for his adaptations of classic Edgar Allan Poe stories starring Vincent Price. He is also well known for spotting talent and gave a head start to the likes of Jack Nicholson, Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola. Now retired as a director, Corman continues to work as a producer.
This boxset includes:
- THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER (1960): The first of Corman’s Poe adaptations is a claustrophobic gothic horror. The film stars Vincent Price as Roderick Usher; a man who is determined that the family line end with the death of himself and his sister, even if that means burying her alive...
- THE PIT AND THE PENDULAM (1961): Vincent Price plays a man obsessed with the fear that his wife was buried alive in the castle torture chamber in this classic Edgar Allan Poe tale.
- THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH (1964): Visually imaginative and macabre film loosely based on the Edgar Allan Poe story which stars Vincent Price as Prince Prospero, a man of Satan and a tyrannical power in plague-ridden 12th Century Italy.
| THE RICHARD LESTER COLLECTION |
Richard Lester began his career as a director in television in the fifties working with comedians Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan and had his first success with the Beatles films A Hard Day’s Night and HELP. His style is characterised by a flair for visual comedy and a subversive sense of humour with many of his most successful films embodying the mood of the swinging sixties.
This boxset includes:
- A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM (1966): Zero Mostel, Buster Keaton, Phil Silvers scam their way through this boisterous romp amidst gorgeous girls, mistaken identities, cunning disguises and great Sondheim songs.
- HOW I WON THE WAR (1967): John Lennon made his acting debut in this hilariously surreal collage of battle footage and one-liners lampooning the absurdity of the war.
- THE KNACK… AND HOW TO GET IT (1965): A fun-filled swinging sixties comedy about a man (Ray Brooks) who has "the Knack" of seducing women and the mild mannered school teacher (Michael Crawford) who desperately want to learn from him.
