Clannad have given a unique voice to modern Irish music. They have combined a deep love of traditional strains with a bold approach to writing and recording. Their legacy is a hugely impressive collection of albums, touching on folk, rock, ambient, jazz and world music. Many of their recordings have featured lyrics in their native Gaelic tongue, while others have been performed in English. Either way, those vocals have plugged directly into the popular imagination.
2008 marks many milestones for Clannad, the originators of that much imitated, haunting, ethereal sound.
It's 35 Years since their first album was released. 25 years since their timeless piece 'Theme From Harry's Game' became a chart hit across Europe and 10 years have passed since their last studio album release, the Grammy Award winning 'Landmarks'.
Across their 35 year career they have sold over 10 million records in all corners of the globe. As well as Grammy awards they have also been honoured with an Ivor Novello and a BAFTA award.
Bono, who sang with them on the hit 'In A Lifetime', describes their sound as “like hearing the sound of angels singing.” Their music has featured in numerous films such as Patriot Games and Last Of The Mohicans and they also composed all the music for three series of the hugely successful 'Robin Of Sherwood' TV show.
After an extended break from touring the band now return to the live stage with a series of shows planned for the UK in March. The concerts provide a rare chance to see them performing material from across their entire ground breaking career.
