Based in Baltimore, the award winning ‘Charm City’ released on DVD in the UK on 29th January 2007, follows three friends and ex-criminals, Jay, Rodey and Sean who have learned to hustle to survive. Turning their backs on their old life style, dealing drugs on the street, they legitimately set up in business as night club owners trying to operate within the system. However when they devise a scheme to recoup funds from Chauncey, a former drug dealer partner who has been ‘disrespecting them on the streets’, the friends fall out of favour with Zeke, a notorious drug dealer and murderer from another neighbourhood.
‘Charm City’, released by VDI Entertainment, is a directorial debut by Derick Thomas, who also wrote the screen play. Thomas grew up on the projects and has ‘carried a camera around since he was 4 or 5’. Before turning his talents to feature film Thomas filmed music videos for local hip hop groups. The film was made on a modest budget of $75,000 using local Baltimore acting talent, which adds to its impact as a film with characters that deal with real life in an authentic setting. Also starring are Jerome ‘RO’ Brooks, Star Spangled and Aquil ‘Q’ Oseitutu.
‘Charm City’ gives a true-to-life impression of life on the streets of Baltimore and is stylistically different in that Jay, Rodey and Sean choose cell phones over guns to mastermind a plot that manipulates the cops and sets their old enemies against each other. The key theme revolves around the social dynamic that links small business to the drug culture with added dramatic tensions arising from sub-plot disagreements over women.
