An Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe winner for Best Foreign Language Film and winner of three awards at the 2005 Berlin Film Festival, the film was written by Hany Abu-Assad (Ford Transit, Rana's Wedding) & Bero Beyer and directed by Abu-Assad.
Met with universal critical acclaim upon its cinema release, The Sun said that it “will keep you thinking a long time after the gut-wrenching finale. Insightful and amazing.” and the Financial Times called it a “Brilliantly crafted drama.” with the Independent on Sunday going as far as to say “This provocative, troubling film is essential viewing.”
PARADISE NOW
On a typical day in the West Bank city of Nablus, where daily life grinds on amidst crushing poverty and the occasional rocket blast, we meet two childhood best friends, Saïd (Kais Nashef) and Khaled (Ali Suliman) two young Palestinian men about to embark upon what may be the last 48 hours of their lives. |
Saïd is approached by a point man for an unnamed Palestinian organization, who informs Saïd that he and Khaled have been chosen to carry out a strike in Tel Aviv. They have been chosen for this mission as a team, because each had expressed a wish that if either is to die a martyr, the other would want to die alongside his best friend.
Clearly proud to be selected and prepared for this moment for most of their lives, Saïd and Khaled are permitted to spend a last night at home, although they must keep their mission secret even from their families.
The following day, Saïd and Khaled are ritually bathed and strapped with explosives, and fed something akin to a “last supper.” After videotaping last statements, they are lead to a hole in the fence that marks the Israeli border, where they are to meet an Israeli mercenary who will drive them to Tel Aviv. But here the plan goes horribly wrong, as an Israeli police car arrives on the horizon, and Saïd and Khaled are separated from their handlers and subsequently from each other.
